Henrik Ibsen s A Doll s House - 1447 Words

In the modern drama, A Doll’s House, Norwegian author, Henrik Ibsen, place emphasis on the societal expectations, and the character’s response to them. He uses Torvald, and Nora, along with Krogstad, and Kristine, both as couples and as individuals to help showcase this through literary devices. Ibsen’s use of juxtaposition both between the couples, and between the individuals highlight societal norms emphasis on gender roles and appearances in order to show that only social outcast can overcome societal rules to achieve true happiness. One example of this, can be seen between the characters of Nora, and Mrs. Linde. In the beginning, the characters seem to be advocating conformation to social norms, due to Nora’s description as a married†¦show more content†¦Nora, on the others hand, outwardly appears to conform to societal standards unlike Mrs. Linde, yet grows unhappy due to the pressures of hiding what society considers her deviant behavior. Th e combination of trying to maintain her status in society, and trying to protect her children from the corrupting influence of a â€Å"deceitful mother† (Ibsen 27), who Torvald has unknowingly dubbed her, has caused her to have suicidal thoughts. Her conformity in traditional motherly role and her maintainace of her position in society contributes to her depressive state. Finally, toward the end both women switch roles. Nora has an epiphany, becomes unconcerned about her social status, and focus more in depth on intellectual questions, like â€Å"if what the clergyman said is true† about religion and â€Å"who is right, the world or [her]† (Ibsen 68-69). She decides to leave Torvald and her children, in order to pursue self-realization, which was an unheard of act for a woman at the time whose duties were believed to be located at home with her husband. The juxtaposition between the two women is especially prominent here, since as Nora leaves her family, as Mrs. Linde becomes integrated with Krogstad’s. Although, it seems Mrs. Linde is conforming to society, looks are deceiving. How well has research supported Piaget’s theory of object permanence? An object is a form of matter which continuously exists in time and space. This fact is known to adults, however, the question of whether infants share the concept of objects as temporally and spatially continuous has raised many contradictions across the field of cognitive and developmental psychology. Jean Piaget’s theory of cognitive development (1954) states that the acquisition of object permanence—the recognition that objects do not cease to exist out of sight—begins in infancy at around the age of 8 to 9 months old, identified as stage four. Preceding that, infants are said to view objects without permanence and see them as â€Å"mere image[s] which re enters the void as soon as it vanishes, and emerges from it for no objective reason† (1954, p. 11). The development of object permanence, and ergo understanding that events occur in the world independently of one s own actions, signals the transition from the sensory motor stage to the next stage o f development, pre-operational. It is only through comparing who I am now to who I was before that I realize that, amazingly enough, I have changed. If I had to label myself, Id say that I was your typical child; carefree, impatient and devoid of any form of stress or concern for anything. It was a mindless existence that I lived in through my childhood. Basically, I was ignorant and I wouldnt have given a rats ass if anyone had told me that. My parents told me that as a child, I rarely cried, complained or asked for anything. I was a laid-back child. School was not really something I thought of or tried at. I had my share of mischief accompanied by hordes of detentions and lectures, all of which I handled with complete apathy. Learning was an obligation that, fortunately, I just happened to do well at. Most of my days were spent on sports and other active forms of entertainment. One particular hobby that I remember from my childhood was catching dragonflies in my grandparents orchard. I used to cut off their wings and watch them drag their bodies along in an imbalanced posture. I didnt really think of it as cruel. Actually, I found it entertaining. In a way, I think of myself as the dragonfly now. I know that my wings can be cut off temporarily once in awhile and Ill be the one under the scrutiny of people as I heave my heavy weight along. But I will find some inventive way to keep moving along. I know that I can be adaptive and resourceful. As a child, I already knew how to be blasÃÆ'Â © and casual about predicaments I might find myself in. So at a young age, I mastered the art of simply placing one foot in front of the other and always remaining composed, whether knee deep in trouble or trudging through six miles of boredom. This sense of rationality has proved to be one of my most useful tools. Im glad that I realized, so early in my life, that I am steady and independent enough to be confident. As a result of this realization, ambition grew. At times, school does not feel like such an obligation. Like a sponge, Im at a stage where I want to soak up all the knowledge there is. Im not so ignorant anymore either, though sometimes I wish that I could just turn my head in the other direction and walk away. For such an undaunted child, Ive turned out to be so apprehensive and eager for experience and life. There are hardly any challenges that I wouldnt willingly take on. In the past two years, Ive taken control of steering and directed myself to activities and experiences that Ive never executed before. Instead of going to school, I took home school so that I could travel and do things that I normally wouldnt be able to do if I was at high school. The many emotional and social factors that I underwent are what make up who I am and determine why I act or feel the way I do.
